The prescription drug Actos (Pioglitazone) is prescribed for Type2 Diabetes. Actos is used for the treatment of patients with Type 2 diabetes to help control blood sugar levels in the body. The American Diabetes Association issued a warning to Actos patient’s warning of an increased risk of developing congestive heart failure and kidney problems.  A new study by the American Diabetes Association has also linked Actos to macular edema (an eye disease that can lead to blindness). Actos has also been linked to an increased risk of stroke, heart attack, and other serious side effects.

Pioglitazone has been linked with bladder cancer and has been banned in many countries. In 2008, Actos was the 10th-best selling drug in the United States with more than $2.4 billion in sales. Actos is manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals.

FDA Warnings and Actos

The FDA is now conducting an ongoing safety review of pioglitazone-containing drugs. 

In September 2010, the FDA issued a warning linking Actos to an increased risk of bladder cancer among patients who had taken Actos for the highest dosage and longest period of time taking of the drug. The FDA warining said that thier finding was not proof that Actos caused bladder cancer, but stated that “findings from studies in animals and humans suggest that this is a potential safety risk that needs further study.”
In June 2011, the FDA issued a warning of the link between Actos and an increased risk of bladder cancer based on a review from a 5-year ongoing study.

In August 2011, the FDA informed the Actos patients that a new drug label has been approved for Actos and other medicines that contain pioglitazone. The warning states that when pioglitazone is taken for more than 1 year there is an associated increased risk of bladder cancer.
